Step-by-step tutorial for creating a new item in ERPNext, including options for adding a batch, serial numbers, and item tax using an Item Tax Template.
Step 1: Navigate to the Item Master
- Log in to your ERPNext account.
- On the dashboard, go to the "Stock" module.
- Under "Stock," locate and click on "Item". You will be taken to the Item List.
Step 2: Create a New Item
- On the Item List page, click the "New" button (usually located in the top-right corner).
- A form will open up to create a new item. Fill in the following fields:
- Item Code: This can be any unique identifier for the item (e.g., "Product-001").
- Item Name: A descriptive name for your item.
- Item Group: Select the appropriate group (e.g., "Dairy" or "Poultry").
- Is Stock Item: Check this box if this item will be managed through inventory.
- Maintain Stock: Ensure this box is checked if you plan to track stock levels for the item.
- Note: The system will not allow you to delete any item which has "Is Stock", "Has Batch" or "Has Serial No." ticked and inventory updated in the system.
Step 3: Enable Batches or Serial Numbers
- Scroll down to the Inventory section.
- You will see options for Has Batch No and Has Serial No. Based on your needs:
- For Batches:
- Check the box labeled "Has Batch No" if you want to manage stock in batches.
- Enter the Batch Creation Method (automatic or manual).
- For Serial Numbers:
- Check the box labeled "Has Serial No" to track individual units.
- Enter the Serial Number Series for automatic generation of serial numbers, or leave it blank for manual entry.
Step 4: Set Pricing and UOM (Optional)
- Under the UOM (Unit of Measure) section, choose the unit in which the item is typically measured (e.g., kilograms, pieces).
- If you want to add a price for the item, go to the Price List section and add prices for various price lists, such as standard selling price or buying price.
Step 5: Save the Item
- Review all the details you have entered.
- If everything is correct, click the "Save" button at the top or bottom of the form.
Step 6: Optional Settings
- Stock Settings: You can set minimum and maximum stock levels under the "Stock Level" section.
- Accounting Details: You can assign expense and income accounts under the "Accounting" section if necessary.
Step 7: Verify Item Creation
- Once saved, navigate back to the Item List to ensure the new item appears.
- You can also test batch or serial number creation by making a stock entry for the item.
Now you have successfully created a new item in ERPNext, with batch and serial number options enabled and item tax applied via an Item Tax Template.
